REPORT: Cardinals Interested In Justin Turner

justinturner

According to Jon Morosi of Fox Sports, the St. Louis Cardinals are interested in signing free-agent Justin Turner. Morosi also stated that to make this signing realistic, they would probably need to trade Jhonny Peralta.

In 2016, Turner held a batting average of .275, hit 27 home runs and drove in 90 runs. Turner played 144 games at third base last season, made only 9 errors, fielded a .972 fielding percentage, and saved 7 defensive runs.

With a loaded infield already, the Cardinals would for sure need to move Peralta, like Morosi mentioned. Last season was tough for Peralta as he battled an injury. In 82 games, Peralta held a .260 batting average, hit 8 home runs and drove in only 29 runs. Playing third base 67 times in 2016, Peralta made 4 errors and saved -7 defensive runs.

The Cardinals have made it clear this offseason that upgrading in CF is a priority. With the rumors of their interest in Turner, it brings up questions of whether needing to trade Peralta will make the possibility of trading for a CF more likely. If a trade isn’t the answer for a centerfielder, then free-agents like Dexter Fowler and Ian Desmond seem to be their only options this offseason. In today’s market, the prices for those guys could be pretty high, making a trade the cheaper option.

When asked who would be a quality outfielder for the Cardinals to trade for, one Cardinal fan answered with Adam Eaton. Who knows what the trade price for Eaton would be, but he would definitely be an upgrade in the outfield. In 2016, Eaton held a .284 batting average, hit 14 home runs, and drove in 59 runs in 157 games. In 156 games in the outfield, Eaton committed only 5 errors, fielded a .989 fielding percentage, and saved 20 defensive runs.

Anyone that watched the Cardinals in 2016 knows that they had a terrible year on the defensive side of things. Committing 107 errors and fielding a .983 fielding percentage, ranked them as the 6th worst defense in the Major Leagues last season. After a tough defensive year, the Cardinals are making it a priority to upgrade their defense. Adding Justin Turner and Adam Eaton would definitely help the Cardinals out on defense.

We will have to wait and see what the Cardinals do, so stay tuned.
