Baseball just keeps expanding.
Last night, Gift Ngoepe became the first African born player to reach the majors. He also became the first African born player to get a hit in MLB. It wasn't an easy hit either. It came off of one of the best pitchers in baseball in John Lester. Ngoepe earned that hit. And he's earned a chance as depth on the Pirates roster with his great defense in the minors. In the small sample size from last night, he looks to have good plate discipline and a keen eye. That should help him stick on the roster.
This could be the step that'll bring more African born players to the majors and maybe even players from other places that haven't jumped in on the baseball craze.
Last night, Ngoepe opened the door for something very exciting in baseball. Let's see what else decides to come through it.
