The New York Mets have made quite an impact this offseason. The Mets quickly got the offseason started by resigning outfielder Yoenis Cespedes to a lucrative 4 year, 110 million dollar contract with a full no trade clause, but ever since November 30th when the Mets re-signed Cespedes, The metropolitans have yet to make another move except a few minor league deals. But for all Mets fans, we can finally say that there are finally some rumblings about the Mets that do not include trading Jay Bruce.
•At the beginning of the offseason, the Mets were unwilling to move outfielder Juan Lagares, but despite the Mets showing their unwillingness to trade him, teams still are showing interest in Lagares. Lagares is coming off of his second unproductive offensive season in a row but Juan was one of the 2013 Wilson Defensive Players of the Year, A 2014 Gold Glove winner, and is still one of the best defensive outfielders in todays game. At the moment, it is still not confirmed that Lagares will be traded but talks are still warming up. The main reason why these trade talks are heating up is because if the Mets trade lagares, it will free up 4.5 million dollars of their payroll to possibly explore options for their bullpen.
•In related news when it comes to the Mets , Reliever Fernando Salas has resigned with the Mets on a 1 year $3 million dollar contract with $350k in incentives. Salas will be playing a much bigger part to the Mets bullpen in the first month of the season due to the impending suspension of closer Jeurys Familia. Salas had a 4.47 ERA, a 7.2 K/9 with a 3.0 BB/9 with the Angels, At the trade deadline the Mets acquired Salas in a trade and he did amazin’ *pun intended* for the Mets at the end of the 2016 season where Salas put up a dominant 2.08 ERA in 17 1/3 innings for the Mets. Salas will likely serve as the 7th inning man for the Mets.
•Lefthander Jerry Blevins Is another key piece of the Mets bullpen, At the beginning of the offseason, it was believed that the mets would not be able to make an offer that Blevins could at least consider after Mike Dunn’s 3 year 19 Million dollar deal with the Rockies would set up the market for left handers. At this point in time, Blevins has at least a one year, 6 million dollar deal on the table and it is believed that the Mets are the ones that offered the deal. Blevins is believed to be seeking a multi-year deal and has a very realistic chance of getting it. Blevins had a 2.79 ERA with 11.14 K/9 against 3.21 BB/9 in 42 innings last year. According to mlbtraderumors.com, The Mets are trying to avoid a multiyear deal but are willing to offer a backloaded 2 year deal according to Ken Davidoff and Mike Puma of the New York Post to Blevins which would be very reasonable for both sides.
•In other Mets bullpen news, as the Mets continue to bolster their bullpen, It is reported that the Mets and relief pitcher Sergio Romo have mutual interest in each other. At the moment, It is reported that the Los Angeles Dodgers are interested in Romo along with a mystery team. The mystery team could also possibly be the Washington Nationals who lost closer Mark Melancon to free agency. Romo spoke to Casey Stern of MLB network on Tuesday and said that both the Nationals & the Mets have expressed interest in him and he is also willing to leave the west coast to sign with either team, The Mets are also considering right hander Joe Smith.
