The Indians came into tonight’s game having defeated the Texas Rangers in back-to-back games. They were looking to complete a three-game sweep of the Rangers in their season opening series.
With a two run lead in the ninth inning, the Rangers turned to closer Sam Dyson. Outfielders Yandy Diaz and Tyler Naquin led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Catcher Yan Gomes flew out for the first out, then right fielder Abraham Almonte walked to load the bases.
Dyson then walked DH Carlos Santana on four pitches to load the bases and force in a run. Shortstop Francisco Lindor then came up with the bases loaded, down by two runs. Lindor turned on a 1-1 fastball and crushed it to deep right field for the go-ahead, and eventual game winning grand slam.
For Lindor, it was his second homer of the game, with the first being a solo shot in the sixth. After going 0-for-6 in the first tow games to start the season, Lindor needed this three hit game. The grand slam was the first of his career, and his five RBI’s on the day set a new career high.
Second baseman Jose Ramirez also picked up a pair of RBI’s on a two run single early in the game.
The 9-6 victory gave the defending AL Champs a season opening series sweep, and an undefeated 3-0 start to the regular season.
