According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Arizona Diamondbacks have signed free agent catcher Jeff Mathis to a two year deal worth $4 million. Mathis, 33, will earn $2 million in both 2017 and 2018.
Mathis will replace the departing Wellington Castillo as the Diamondbacks' starting catcher, though he will likely cede some time to Chris Herrmann who showed big offensive talent in his limited work in 2016. Mathis is widely regarded as one of the best pitch framers in the majors, which could help a pitching staff in Arizona that was flush with talent but lacked results in 2016. Mathis is a downgrade offensively from Castillo, making a timeshare with Herrmann more likely as the Diamondbacks won't expect much offensively from the veteran Mathis.
