Well i’m late but this is a momentous moment in Braves baseball history so it had to be posted either way.21 years ago,(yesterday 10/28/16), the Braves won the 1995 World Series (after failing in their 2 previous attempts) which pitted them aganist the (suprise, suprise,) Indians whose front office was led by the current Braves President of baseball operations John Hart. The series was expected to be just handed to the Braves with their tremendous pitching staff, which included Greg Maddux,Tom Galvine,John Smoltz, and Steve Avery.
Game 1, saw the game essentially being controlled by both Pitchers throughout all 9 innings. Greg Maddux pitched a two hit complete game shutout. The score was 1-1 in the bottom of the 7th when Luis Polonia hit into a run scoring force-play and Rafael Belliard placing down a perfect suicide squeeze, giving the Braves a 3-1 lead which they would control into the bottom of the 9th until the scored a run but failed to do much more as the Braves won Game 1.
Game 2, saw Tom Glavine pitch an essential gem and when the Braves scored a heart crushing 2-run homer by Javy Lopez in the bottom of the 6th it would prove to be crucial as the Braves won the game 4-3, much to the assist of Javy Lopez who also picked off the young Manny Ramirez at first in the 8th to erase a potential game-tying base-runner.
Game 3, saw John Smoltz struggle a bit to begin the game giving up 4 runs in 3 innings. He would eventually be taken out, which would give the Braves a chance to begin their scoring. The game ended up going into extra innings and ended up being won by the Indians on an Eddie Murray single scoring the pinch runner Alavro Espinoza to win the game.
Game 4, saw the Braves ride a 5 inning shutout by Avery until giving up a solo shot to Albert Belle in the 6th. The Braves would eventually win this one 5-2 following a 3 run 7th which saw David Justice plate 2 of the three runs that inning with a 2-Rbi single.Mark Wholers would struggle in the latter part of the game which would give way to Pedro Boron Jr. to save and game and give the Braves the 3-1 series advantage.
Game 5, this game would see Greg Maddux actually struggle (everyone has their bad games). Maddux would give up 4 runs in 5 innings and the Indians offense would find its swagger led by Jim Thome and Albert Belle. Ryan Klesko would homer for the Braves in his 3rd straight game becoming the first person to ever home in 3 consecutive road games. According to Wikipedia (trustworthy at times) This would be the last the last time The world series was ever televised on Abc.
Game 6, Tom Glavine would pitch 8 innings of 1 hit ball being backed by a 6th inning solo shot by David Justice after being scrutinized for struggling during the World Series. This game would end with Wohlers saving the game in the 9th inning and the final out being recorded by Marquis Grissom. This would mark the only time that an Atlanta Franchise would win a Championship giving the city the National spotlight as WORLD SERIES CAHMPIONS!
Enjoy the World Series knowing that “My” Braves are partially the cause for your baseball drought misery Indians fans. (Insert too long evil laugh here) 🙂
